Cantilan, Surigao del Sur – The 36th Infantry (Valor) Battalion in partnership with Local Government Unit of Cantilan Surigao del Sur conducts 1st Cantilan Youth Leadership Summit 2018 with a theme “Kabataan: Tunay Na Makabayan para sa Pagbabago” held at Libtong Cove, Brgy General Island, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur at 9 o’clock in the morning, Friday, November 23, 2018.
The summit with a total of one – hundred seven (107) participants coming from seventeen (17) different barangays of said town was graced by Hon Philip A Pichay, Municipal Mayor of Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, as Guest of Honor and Speaker during the Opening Ceremony this morning.
Said summit kicked – off yesterday afternoon, November 22, 2018, for the arrival and registration of the participants and will run until November 25, 2018, Sunday afternoon. In her expectation of the summit, Ms Evelyn Angeles, 18 yrs old, an IP youth participant from a far flung barangay of Lubo of same town considered as geographically isolated and disadvantageous area and conflict affected areas said “Niari ko diri kay arun makakat-on sa mga maayung butang as a leader og mahimung panalaminan sa katribu nga youth sa among barangay ug mahimong a good leader sa kabatan-onan”, in their vernacular language.
Mayor Pichay, in his speech, stressed that learning is acquiring from the five (5) senses of the human body, and the youth needs to learn from whatever knowledge the summit will impart. Likewise, He delivered a motivational and inspiring message about understanding the real meaning of “Hanap Buhay” which is “maghanap ng paraan para mabuhay”. Accordingly, this will avoid the youth in engaging from activities that destroy’s future.
The objectives of the 4 day-stay in activity is to instill volunteerism and mold the youth to become advocate of peace and hone them as responsible, productive and a well – informed members of the community.
In his statement, Lt Col Xerxes A Trinidad PA, Commanding Officer of 36IB, said “our mandate is to serve and protect the Filipino people and it is significant that we also focus on one of the vulnerable sector of the society which is mostly untapped and unmanaged, our youth. With this summit, as part of our security awareness campaign, our hope is to save the youth from being exploited and recruited by the CPP-NPA Terrorist and other lawless elements. We call on to the terrorist NPAs that they shall give them a chance to achieve their aspiration and be successful in life”.
“We are calling to all parents and other sectors of the society that while we are doing our mandate with respect to the campaign to address the insurgency problem, it is their share to guide their youth as it is not the sole responsibility of the Army but it is shared by the members of the society”, Lt Col Trinidad added.
